K3WWP - Reviews of QRP Rigs

This review of the FT-817 transceiver was contributed by Todd Carpenter, N9YSQ.

The FT 817 is a marvelous rig. Any qrp operator who wants a portable battery/mains capable multiband transceiver can hardly go wrong with this radio. I love all the features. My original desire was to find an affordable radio that would be similar in capability to a WWII manpack radio (such as a WS no. 19.) I wanted it to have HF ham bands an SWL capability at similar power out capabilities. Along came the 817. What a jewel! Not only does it cover all the HF bands, but the 60 meter channels as well. It additionally covers 6,2, 70cm all mode and the AM/FM broadcast bands. I have used mine as the replacement for a car stereo, for portable operating, and emergency service work. Some victories with this rig include long island New York from western Kentucky with a half watt on 20m ssb on an inverted V mounted at 15ft apex to ground. Also mobile 20m ssb 5 watts to Puerto Rico and surrounding islands on mobile mounted 96 inch whip. 10m ssb mobile to California, 12 meter ssb to N Carolina, and 17m ssb to Arizona on same antenna mobile with 5 watts. Also Texas, Northern Ohio, Toronto Canada, and Florida mobile on 40m ssb with a hamstick. For a super versitile rig you can't go wrong with the FT817.

NOTE from K3WWP - Although Todd describes mainly exploits with SSB, the FT-817 can do the same even easier with our wonderful CW mode.
