K3WWP - Reviews of QRP Rigs

This review of the MFJ-9040 transceiver was written by Greg, WB9MII.

I have owned 2 MFJ-9040 rigs. One when I was 7J1ALX in Japan and one here in W9 land.

Both had a claimed power output of 5 watts, but the best I could ever do with either is 4 watts. They covered 7.0 - 7.150 MHz. There is an optional filter and keyer that can be installed with these rigs but I have neither of these and cannot comment.

In Japan I loaded my 9040 into an inverted Vee and worked everything I could hear and got several "legit" 599's. Later I loaded it into a sloping end fed wire and worked from Japan into the US 6th call area. Before leaving JA land I foolishly traded away this 9040.

Upon retirement from the USN and coming back home to W9 I ordered another MFJ-9040 rig. The only beef I had with this particular MFJ-9040 was that it drifted far and fast, and I had to send it to MFJ twice to get this resolved.

Bottom line: it is a good sturdy QRP rig, the price can't be beat and it would make an excellent second rig or a "starter rig" for a ham on a shoestring budget (something I know much about).
