New ham since end of october but did not get a radio finished until mid november and a reasonable antenna and tuner at the very end of the month. Homebrewing, QRP, straight key CW and software defined radios like the Softrock makes it interesting. I had 5 QSO'n since I got my licence. All on 80m CW around 3550. From southern LA to Boston on 1W so far. I'm looking forard to end up in you log. Regards, Ulf - Ulf K1ULF - South Windsor, CT - Dec 4

Hey John, thanks for the hint on using a 1K resistor to fire up the oscillator on a Vectronics QRP transmitter for spotting. Great idea, and works perfect on my 30 meter version as well! - WB5DYG - Gilbert, AZ - Nov 22

Nice to have worked you at N3A/3 yesterday John. I have been a cw guy since 1960. I belong to NJQRP and very much enjoy building and opertaing QRP CW. I am presently building a new digitally controlled QRP hi-efficiency XCVR that will replace the previous rig I built about 15 years ago. I also have a ton of vintage gear, both commercial and hmbw, including a 2 Acorn tube QRP rig and a 1936 era replica. Great to work your spec event station and we have QSO'd before on your own call. Thanks for the fun. 72, Mario / N2AK - Mario Dianora N2AK - Medford, NJ - Oct 24

John...Great website! Thank you for your support of CW QRP, and simple wire antennas. Don't think we've ever QSO'd...maybe too close...I live in an Akron suburb...maybe on 80M CW some time! I'd be more active on NAQCC but I'm not into contesting...but, I love CQ QRP! Best wishes, John. 73's.....Tim (Remember the NAQCC is MUCH MORE than just contesting - Tim, KD8GZ - Norton, OH - Oct 17

Hi OM, Keep up ALL ur gud work!! 73, Wayne, K3QJX - Wayne, K3QJX - Norristown, PA - Sep 15
Thanks so much for the site. I am a CW man from way back. I learned the moorse code in Navy radio school. I needed 16 wpm to graduate. I operated CW for the U.S. Navy, The U.S. Coast Guard, Commerical radio station WLO Ship to shore CW. When all the commerical jobs in CW were gone I got my amateur ticket. N9BIY. I love the brass pounder nets and as soon as I get equipment to run again I will be up looking. I think it is a shame and a slap in the face for us old guys for the FCC to drop CW requirments. There is a CB ticket for those guys. Leave Amateur Radio alone. I passed my Commercial Radio Telegraph requirments with 20 Wpm and recently passed 25. All on a hand key. They did the same thing with the First Class Radiotelephone ticket. It took me two years of hard study to pass the test and then the did away with it. Now they have third class as technicians at radio stations with no electronic training at all. A truck driver took me job. - Paul N9BIY - Pekin, IN - Sep 11
Great to talk to you again tonight John after all this time. I use your site all the time to look up DX and QSL. You are responsible for my one contact a day challenge. Keep up the great work and hope to hear you again my friend. - Aron NN1F - Bedford, NH - Sep 11

Wow! I remember being really into radio back in about 1997-8, when I was about 15. I used to visit your site all the time while I was preparing for my license exam, etc, but due to family issues at the time(and being a kid with ever-changing interests), I never got around to it. Here we are, 9 or 10 years later and YOU'RE STILL ONLINE!! I can't believe this -- it's like a blast from my past, hah. You've inspired me once again! I'm gonna go out and get the latest license exam prep guides and go for it this time! Hope to see you on the bands, sometime! Keep on rockin'!! - Jay - Ohio - Apr 11

You've got a great site. I didn't know HAM radio was still so interesting! I guess its because Im a nastalgia guy.. Alot of people dont realize HAM radio is actually the beginning of the public internet! - Wayne Bienek - Milford, MI - Apr 1
Great site, Gave me incentive to take my Code test on Feb 16th rather than just wait until the 24th and "grandfather" into ham I got my General on Jan 17th. Still have not had a CW QSO as no one seems to want to talk to a newbie, a 50 yr. old one at that!. I also made a random wire (inspired by yours) and it works great on most bands especially 40 and 80 meters.' Keep up the GREAT work! - Randy Garth KD8EZU - Martinsburg, WV - Mar 28

Hi John; I am writing in regard to the FCC decision to eliminate the Morse Code requirement for Amateur Radio licensing beginning Feb. 23. One person offered the comment that the decision was the "...dumbing down of Amateur Radio." I couldn't agree more. For several decades I have noticed an attitude trend not limited to Amateur Radio but one often seen in such areas as college admission and or employment requirements and others. The prevailing attitude seems to be "I can't meet your standard so you have to lower them for me." There's an old adage, "Nothing worth doing is easy." As far as radio is concerned I do not believe that it's a matter of "I can't" learn the code," but rather "I don't want to put forth the effort to learn." I fear that what we now have to look forward to is an influx of "10-4 Good Buddy" types on the Amateur bands. I predict that it's only a matter of time until we see additional demands for easier, more simplified tests, and perhaps a further reduction in license types. I realize my comments may anger or offend some. That's not my intention, however, I must say that at this point I don't care if my words offend anyone. Perhaps few people had as much difficulty in learning the code as I did. Years (decades) ago I purchased some code training tapes that sent code in the 3- and 4-wmp range. I actually memorized the tapes before I learned the code. Those tapes were played over and over to the point of wearing out. I also spent countless hours listening to W1AW 5-wpm code practice sessions. It was months before I felt I was ready to take the 5-wpm Novice code test. I passed, but just barely. I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but my point is that anything, including mastering CW, takes effort. Most people would have to put forth much less effort than I did to learn to copy CW. Yet, few are willing to even try. I believe the amount of effort put into anything is consistent with the quality of the end results. Sad to say, quality and striving for excellence don't seem to matter much anymore. In my not always so humble opinion, the recent FCC decision is not only the "...dumbing down of Amateur Radio," it is "Dumb, and dumber than dumb." I guess time will tell. At least the "10-4 good buddies" that are sure to follow won't be heard on the CW portions of the bands-or will they? Sincerely, Tom Mitchell, KB3LFC President and co-founder of the North American QRP CW Club and proud FISTS member. PS: There are about two dozen or more active radio amateurs in Armstrong County, Pa., yet only two of us are CW ops. Most local amateurs lauded the FCC decision to drop the code requirement. Amazing! - Tom Mitchell KB3LFC - Kittanning, PA - Jan 26
Excellent site. I visit every few months and enjoy it. I'll be looking for you on the bands for a QRP QSO. Good luck with your 5000 qso (5000 consecutive days, not 5000 QSO's - JS) goal and 73's ...Dave - Dave Thomas W4DIM - Madison, AL - Jan 24
